Mary Gramlich (The Reading Reviewer) with David Baldacci and THE LAST MILE

THE LAST MILE by David Baldacci

  • Series: Amos Decker series
  • Paperback: 464 pages
  • Publisher: Grand Central Publishing (September 13, 2016)

BLURP...In his #1 New York Times bestseller Memory Man, David Baldacci introduced the extraordinary detective Amos Decker-the man who can forget nothing. Now, Decker returns in a spectacular new thriller . . .

THE LAST MILE...Convicted murderer Melvin Mars is counting down the last hours before his execution--for the violent killing of his parents twenty years earlier--when he's granted an unexpected reprieve. Another man has confessed to the crime.

Amos Decker, newly hired on an FBI special task force, takes an interest in Mars's case after discovering the striking similarities to his own life: Both men were talented football players with promising careers cut short by tragedy. Both men's families were brutally murdered. And in both cases, another suspect came forward, years after the killing, to confess to the crime. A suspect who may or may not have been telling the truth.

The confession has the potential to make Melvin Mars--guilty or not--a free man. Who wants Mars out of prison? And why now?

But when a member of Decker's team disappears, it becomes clear that something much larger--and more sinister--than just one convicted criminal's life hangs in the balance. Decker will need all of his extraordinary brainpower to stop an innocent man from being executed.

AUTHOR BIO...David Baldacci has been writing since childhood, when his mother gave him a lined notebook in which to write down his stories. (Much later, when David thanked her for being the spark that ignited his writing career, she revealed that she'd given him the notebook to keep him quiet, because "every mom needs a break now and then.") David published his first novel, ABSOLUTE POWER, in 1996. A major motion picture adaptation followed, with Clint Eastwood as its director and star. In total, David has published 32 novels for adults; all have been national and international bestsellers and several have been adapted for film and television. His novels have been translated into more than 45 languages and sold in more than 80 countries; over 110 million copies are in print. David has also published five novels for younger readers.

David received his Bachelor's degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law, after which he practiced law in Washington, D.C.

While David is involved with several philanthropic organizations, his greatest efforts are dedicated to his family's Wish You Well Foundation®. Established by David and his wife, Michelle, the Wish You Well Foundation supports family and adult literacy in the United States by fostering and promoting the development and expansion of literacy and educational programs. In 2008 the Foundation partnered with Feeding America to launch Feeding Body & Mind, a program to address the connection between literacy, poverty and hunger. Through Feeding Body & Mind, more than 1 million new and gently used books have been collected and distributed through food banks to families in need.

David and his family live in Virginia.

Her face fell, and she nibbled on her bottom lip as she continued to stare into the ballroom. Abruptly, she turned eyes that blazed green fire on him, and his heart lurched. “Do you know which one is the duke?”
“Yes, yes, I do.” Hal gulped and motioned to the couples milling on the floor, between sets. “Actually, there are two dukes here this evening.” He drew closer to her, and the faint but delightful flowery fragrance of hyacinth wafted over him. “You see that gentleman there,” he said, pointing to the Duke of Carlisle, “the one with the very wide side whiskers?”
Qu’est-ce que c’est?”
“Whiskers.” Hal stroked his smooth cheeks, side whiskers being one of fashion’s affectations he particularly disliked.
“Ah, c’est lui.” She nodded then peered at the duke and frowned. “He is very old, n’est-il pas?”
Hal laughed softly. “Dukes have a habit of doing that.” His own father was still hearty at fifty-five. “Some are much younger.” He scanned the crowd. “There, the man in the black coat and white breeches?”
“Which one?” She stared at the groups, searching. “There are so many.”
Damn. How to describe a man dressed like every other one? “He’s wearing quite a large jeweled pin in his cravat. A diamond. It’s sparkling.”
“The very handsome one, next to the lady in the dark pink stripes?”
“Exactly.” Hal stepped back, still unwilling to be seen. “Well, he is also a duke. The Duke of Rother.”
“Oh!” Gabriella clutched the railing and leaned over. “That is he? He is très beau.”
“Whoa.” Hal grabbed her about the waist and pulled her back. “You don’t want them to see you, do you?”
Non.” She gazed longingly at the duke then stepped back from the railing. “Le duc de Rother.” When she finally turned to Hal, her eyes sparkled as brightly as the duke’s jewel. “Merci, merci beaucoup, monsieur…my pardon, what is your name?”

Letter from Jayson Harmon, hero of HER ROGUE ALPHA.
Hi everyone. I’m Jayson Harmon, and you’ll be seeing me in the next X-OPS book called HER ROGUE ALPHA. Paige asked me to tell you about my background and how I feel about my girlfriend, Layla Halliwell. I usually don’t like talking about personal stuff like this, but Paige threatened to go back into the book and give me a pink Mohawk and size six boots if I didn’t, so here goes.
I used to be in the Army Special Forces, but I got injured during a mission in Afghanistan and ended up taking a butt load of shrapnel in my back. The Army did their best to patch me up, but it didn’t help. I still got medically separated from the Army. I have to admit; I’m not dealing with that decision very well. The Army was going to be my life, and now that’s all gone. Worse, the guys on my SF A-team are still out there, fighting and risking their lives without me. That stings. Now I’m left figuring where my so-called life goes from here—if anywhere. I have a job running the weapon ranges at the Department of Covert Operations, but watching field agents train to go on missions I’ll never be able to is hard as hell. It wasn’t the life I pictured having, but I’m trying to make the best of it.
I also have an amazing girlfriend, though I can’t for the life of me figure out why she’s interested in broken man like me. Feline shifter Layla Halliwell is total perfection. She’s beautiful, talented, and has everything going for her. She’s even getting ready to go out on her first field mission as a DCO agent. Thinking about her being out there, in danger, without me there to watch her back is driving me crazy with worry.
Now the deputy director of the DCO wants me to take an experimental drug that will not only heal my injuries, but give me shifter abilities. Problem is, people who were given previous versions of that same serum either died or ended up like wild, uncontrollable animals. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was terrified to take the stuff, but at the same time, I’m afraid not to take it.
Is it crazy for someone like me—as screwed up as I am—to want to be whole enough to be able to be Layla’s partner in every way possible, including in the field on missions? I’d do anything for a chance like that.

Letter from Layla Halliwell, heroine of HER ROGUE ALPHA.
Hi! It feels kind of strange to write an open letter to people I don’t know, disclosing personal—not to mention classified—information. But Paige is nodding at me, so I guess this is okay.
I went to college to become a psychologist because I’ve always wanted help people. After graduation, I got a job at the Department of Covert Operations so I could work with shifters like me. I didn’t take the job intending to ever become a field agent, but now that I’m in training to become on, I’m excited at the prospect. I’ll still help people and I won’t have to sit behind a desk to do it.
My boyfriend, Jayson Harmon, on the other hand, isn’t as thrilled about my career change. He’s exactly what I’m looking for in a man and I really care about him. He’s strong (physically and mentally), heroic, charming, romantic, and yeah, he’s attractive as hell, too! Problem is, he seems determined to push me away. I know he’s still dealing with injuries he sustained in Afghanistan and I want to help him get through this rough time in his life, but I have to admit, it’s wearing me down. I don’t know how much more I can handle. How can I help him when he refuses that help? This mission I’m about to head out on might be the last straw. I’m not sure if our relationship can handle something like that. And if that isn’t enough, the deputy director of the DCO is trying to talk Jayson into taking an experimental drug he claims will not only heal Jayson, but also give him shifter abilities. I’ve tried to talk him out of it, but I don’t think I was very successful. I’m scared he’s going to be something stupid and extreme while I’m away on this mission, and I won’t be there to stop him…

You can find out more about Layla and Jayson’s story in Paige Tyler’s latest release, Her Rogue Alpha. Download the first THREE chapters here!

Jake and Miranda Harkner’s love helped shape a nation and, over the years, they’ve endured all of the dangers a wild and brutal West could throw at them. Now they are sitting down with us to discuss how they’ve made their happy ever after last a lifetime.

Author’s Note: This interview would have taken place in 1896 at Jake’s ranch (the J&L) in Colorado. The interviewer would have taken note that Randy is a tiny, beautiful blond with gray/green eyes who doesn’t look her age at all. Randy is a stark contrast to her husband Jake – who stands six feet four inches. He’s broad and well-muscled, deeply tanned, with thick, dark hair that has tiny streaks of white in it. His dark eyes capture a person right down to their toes.

MIRANDA: Oh, my, there are so many positive aspects to our relationship that has kept it going these past thirty years … and I must say that in spite of all of them it’s been a challenge.

JAKE: (Lighting a cigarette) Challenge is probably the biggest understatement of all time.  I am not an easy man to live with and I know it. This beautiful woman sitting next to me has put up with a lot of heartache and danger and hardship because of me and my past. She also knows I sort of go off the deep end sometimes when something bad happens to anyone in my family.  That’s hard for her because I can become a different person when that defensive side shows itself.

MIRANDA:  Jake grew up in a horribly abusive home where he knew no love, at least not from his father, who often beat him with a belt and who killed Jake’s mother and little brother.  At first I had to teach Jake what love was all about, and now he has the family he never dreamed he could have, and we all love him.  He treasures that above all things and would give his life for any one of us, especially our precious grandchildren. We have six now.

JAKE:  I have kind of a dark side where I go when someone I love has been hurt, or when I feel unworthy of the love my family has shown me … especially Miranda.

MIRANDA:  Dark side is putting it mildly. Jake can be extremely ruthless to his enemies, and his enemies are anyone who threatens those he loves. But he’s a gentle, kind, loving man to all of us.  Never has he directed that anger he carries deep inside toward any of us, not ever.  And that brings us back to why we’ve lasted.  Jake adores me and he never fails to tell me or show me.  A woman couldn’t feel more loved than the way Jake loves a woman.

JAKE: I was probably the worst thing that ever happened to her.  I was a mess when she first met me, a wanted man.  I even tried to leave her a few times because I thought she’d be better off without me.  She was all beauty and graciousness, educated and sophisticated.  I was pretty much the opposite of all those things.  When I first met her and knew life would be hell for her if I acted on my feelings, I decided to ride out of her life.

MIRANDA: But he came back for me because he loved me and wanted to try to change his life.  He found me near death from a snake bite and he saved my life.  He was so gentle and loving … and we knew we couldn’t live without each other after that.  I guess you’d say the secret to our relationship is that I fully understand Jake, how his mind works, how desperately he wants to be loved.  There is a little boy inside that just wants someone’s arms around him.  Jake can be the gentlest, sweetest, most provocative lover on the face of the earth.  When we make love it’s not just physical. It’s as though our souls are mingling and our hearts are beating for each other.

JAKE: Randy is my rock.  She’s the air I breathe.  And I love the fact that she loves that boy inside who is sometimes an emotional mess.  She just loves me right through it all, and I don’t desire her just for her outer beauty, but for her beautiful, forgiving, gracious, understanding heart.  (Jake takes hold of Randy’s hand.)  I never knew about love until I met this woman.

RANDY: And I never knew I’d fall in love with an outlaw.  The man has incredible charisma… and just look at him.  He’s so handsome!  His smile just melts me right to the floor.  I can’t say no to him and he knows it.

JAKE: (Jake grins teasingly.) That’s what I love most about you.  You try hard to say no sometimes, but you always give in.

RANDY: And you are the devil in disguise, Jake Harkner.

An Excerpt:

Just as Randy feared, Jake is bound to embarrass her because they’ve just made love in the woods.  A bear came along and scared off Jake’s horse. Randy knows the horse will run back to camp and their son and maybe more men will come charging up the hill to see what happened.

“Oh, Jake, this is ridiculous!”  Randy quickly pulled on her underwear.  She smoothed her dress, then realized her hair was down and a mess.
“Jake, my hair!  They’ll know.  Oh, this is terrible!”
Jake finished buttoning his shirt.  “I brought my beautiful wife out here so we could be alone.  So what if her hair is down now?”
Randy sat back down on the blanket and fished for the combs and pins that had fallen from her hair.  She quickly twisted the back of her hair up and shoved combs into it to hold the quick up-do in place. She plunked her hat on her head and looked at her husband, who only watched with a big grin on his face.
“Do I look ridiculous?” she asked.
“You look beautiful. It’s impossible for you not to look beautiful.”
“You know what I mean.” Randy stood up. “Am I a mess?”
Jake frowned. “Not bad.  A few strands of hair are hanging down, and the skirt of your dress is a little more wrinkled in front from being pushed up.”
Randy gasped and looked down.
“Oh my gosh!  It is!  Oh, Jake, this is just … I just don’t know what to do!”
“Come here.”
Randy looked at him. He still had a handsome smile that only made her smile in return.  He opened his arms, and she fell into them.
“You are my wife.”  He let go of her and held her face in his hands, gently kissing her.  “And in spite of not having you fully naked beside me, that felt damn good.” He kissed her again.
They heard a whistle.  In the distance they could see Lloyd and one other man riding hard in their direction, the other man leading Jake’s horse behind him.
“Oh, for the love of God,” Randy said as she quickly rolled up the blanket and held it close. “I will never live this down!”

Love Me, Master Me by Anya Summers

Shaking off her malaise, Delilah set her purse on the floor a few steps away, and then took up
her stance. Singing and music, for Delilah, was the one place she could escape reality—or it had been
until recently. It was her heart, the better parts of her soul and, for her, was where her internal peace resided. She hoped she could eventually retrieve the parts of it she'd allowed Ethan to tarnish. She rolled her shoulders, working out a few of the kinks from her travels, expanded her chest,

filling her diaphragm up with oxygen, and slid into her rendition of Ave Maria. As the notes and her voice permeated the space, workers who hadn't laid down their tools stopped mid stroke. Everyone's eyes shifted to her as her voice rose with the cadence, trilling over a high note. She blocked out their stares. She always did, turning inward until there was nothing but the melody inside her veins. The room and its inhabitants dimmed as her voice soared. This was the one space where everything made sense to her, where Delilah felt at home. She didn't get stage fright; not really, she'd always just focused on the way the music made her feel and where it took her when she was on stage. After Delilah's voice hit the final note, ending the song, the room was deadly silent. There were tears in Zoey's eyes as the workers began to clap and hoot their appreciation. "Not to interrupt, but where would you like the band to set up?" A deep bass male voice reminding her of molasses boomed over the applause. There was an audible gasp. And was that a 'squee' from the bride-to-be as she turned toward that male voice? Delilah's gaze shot to the rude interloper, only to spy mega-watt rock star Bastian Dean of the band The Harbingers, with his hands shoved in his ripped jean pockets, replete with a bad boy half smirk and devil may care confident vibe rolling off his hot rod body. He had managed with a few choice words to remove the focus off her and redirect it toward himself. Her hands clenched. Either that or she'd do the man bodily harm. It wasn't that she craved thespotlight, but dammit, Ethan had done the same thing, using her voice to pretend he was the star of the show. It had been a way to erode her personal power and confidence in herself. "I can't believe you are really here!" Zoey said with an audible girlish sigh, her voice filled with a tone of reverence. "In the flesh, love. Where would you like the real band to set up? No offense, just never been one for music that's as old as dirt." He directed the last of his words to Delilah as he sauntered into the room toward Zoey, his long strides eating up the distance between them. Delilah straightened her spine and headed toward the group. She'd graced the stage with icons that spanned multiple generations, withstood arrogant directors and fellow cast members, and even a manager and ex-boyfriend who acted like he owned her, so she would not bow before this arrogant jerk. "That's all right; most pop stars don't understand what it means to make music with staying power," she said. At her intentional dig, Bastian briefly scowled in her direction before he brought Zoey's hand up and kissed the back of it; all gentlemanly like. She didn't buy it for a second. Delilah knew his type all too well.
